A high vacuum valve is a critical component used to control the flow of gases in vacuum systems operating from high vacuum down to ultra‑high vacuum ranges. It provides isolation between different sections of a vacuum line or between a vacuum chamber and the pumping system. Because vacuum processes often require extremely low pressures and very clean environments, the valve must offer excellent sealing performance, low outgassing, and long‑term reliability.The body of a high vacuum valve is typically made from stainless steel due to its mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and compatibility with high‑temperature bake‑out procedures. Internal components are designed to minimize trapped volumes and virtual leaks, which can release gas slowly and degrade vacuum quality. Manual valves use hand wheels or levers and are suitable for systems that do not require frequent switching or automation. Motorized valves provide precise control and can be integrated into computer‑controlled vacuum networks.Performance characteristics of high vacuum valves include leak rate, conductance, pressure range, and cycle life. A very low leak rate ensures that the valve does not introduce significant gas into the system when closed. High conductance in the open state reduces pressure drops and shortens pump‑down times.
